Thailand supports a plethora of production both internally and externally from international companies shooting in Thailand. With a population reaching 64 million, Thailand logged its first feature film in late 1890’s. Prince Sanbassart (Prince Thongthamthawanwong) - The Father of Thai Filmmaking - brought back equipment from Switzerland in 1894,
started recording the daily activities of the King, Rama V, and regularly had public showings at the Palace and rented his films to local theatres. He was the only filmmaker in Thailand until his death in 1919.
The first commercial film shown in Thailand was Parisian Cinematograph on 9th June 1897. The Queen at the time had a private showing on the 21st June and paid Baht 150 for the privilege.
The first commercial film made in Thailand as released in 1923 – Miss Suwana of Siam, directed by Henry MacRae. Unfortunately the original has been lost in time. The second film The White Rose was filmed her in 1928 directed by Robert Kerr. Other films soon followed and endorsed by the Royal Household, the Thai Film industry commenced.
The first all-Thai feature was Chok Sorng Chan (Double Luck), produced by the Wasuwat brothers' Bangkok Film Company in 1927 and directed by Manit Wasuwat. Seventeen films were shot in Tthailand between 1927 and 1932 but only fragments survived archiving. The proponent of this document has recorded around 600 Thai and foreign productions having been shot in Thailand.
Today Thailand remains a unique location with many highly skilled technicians. Throughout the years many films have been recorded as ‘made in Thailand’.
